Unhoused or precariously housed people living in Whalley don’t have access to a space for basic hygiene, including showers, washrooms, and laundry facilities. The lack of hygiene facilities increases risk of otherwise preventable illnesses and infections. These health risks are much higher for women and gender-diverse people. Additionally, there is a desperate need for more public access to waste disposal, such as garbage bins on sidewalks and sharps containers to keep our neighbourhoods free of litter.
These are fundamental services that all human beings should have access to. There are far too few freely accessible public washrooms and hygiene services that are available in Surrey, a city 3 times bigger than Vancouver. Surrey is falling behind other major cities in Canada and the world. This is unacceptable, especially with winter around the corner, putting our community at an even greater risk. We demand that the City of Surrey build hygiene facilities for the public in Whalley
